Having autism is a 'way of being' which influences thinking, feeling, and reactions to people and situations. It is a lifelong condition which affects both girls and boys. A lot of people with autism say they struggle with communication skills and find interacting with the world very confusing and difficult. Being autistic is made up of lots of different aspects—some will feel like strengths, and some will feel difficult and hard to live with. These will be explored throughout the book.

Vicky Martin is the co-author of M is for Autism. She worked with the students of Limpsfield Grange, a residential school for girls with communication and interaction difficulties including Autism Spectrum Disorder, to write and illustrate the book during three months of drama and creative writing workshops. The true-life experiences of the girls were developed into M's story.
