"This is a self-published book that no respectable publisher would touch with a ten-foot shovel. The fourth edition of this underground classic is completely revised, expanded, and updated--half new edition and half sequel. The author draws from forty years of research, experience, and travel to expand and clarify your knowledge and understanding of your poop and what you can do with it"--

The Humanure Handbook, 4th Edition by Joseph C. Jenkins is a pioneering and revolutionary guide to sustainable living through the efficient recycling of human waste. This extraordinary manual, beloved by environmentalists, survivalists, and gardeners alike, delves into the often-taboo subject of composting human waste with insight, humour, and a depth of knowledge accrued over four decades of research and practice. Foregoing traditional sewage systems, this comprehensive volume advocates for a more ecological and holistic approach, emphasising the importance of composting as a life-affirming process that is essential for nurturing and restoring the earth’s ecosystems.

First published in 1994, The Humanure Handbook was initially met with scepticism, its unique and unconventional theme posing a challenge to mainstream publishing. Despite this, its critical acclaim and popularity soared, with editions selling over 65,000 copies in the U.S. alone and translations appearing in 19 languages. Now in its fourth edition, the book continues to inspire with its candid and thorough exploration of turning human waste into valuable compost.

The latest edition of this underground classic has been considerably updated and expanded, offering a wealth of new insights and practical information. Jenkins draws from his extensive personal experiences, research, and global travels to illuminate the vital processes of composting with updated methods and enhanced clarity. Through this work, Jenkins challenges readers to rethink waste management and introduces a radical yet straightforward method of contributing positively to the environment.

A recipient of the prestigious Independent Publisher Outstanding Book of the Year Award, The Humanure Handbook was hailed as "Most Likely to Save the Planet." Its influence extends across various media, having been featured in Mother Earth News, Whole Earth Review, Countryside Journal, The Journal of Environmental Quality, NPR, BBC, CBC, and more. This remarkable book has left its mark on countless forums, bridging the gap between environmental necessity and practical application.

The fourth edition serves not only as an essential resource for those engaged in composting or gardening but also as a fundamental guide for anyone interested in basic survival skills and sustainable living practices. It offers a unique and transformative perspective on waste management, advocating a return to nature-utilising processes that transcend cultural norms to create a sustainable future. With its distinctive blend of practicality and environmental ethics, The Humanure Handbook is an unmatched and indispensable companion in the quest for ecological balance and responsible human coexistence with the Earth.

About the Author

Joseph Jenkins began composting in 1975, and started his firstΒ humanure compost pile in 1976. He has had at least one humanureΒ compost pile brewing continuously for the past 40 years. The HumanureΒ Handbook began as a graduate thesis in 1994 and was self-published asΒ an amateur book in 1995. Since then, Jenkins has published nine printΒ titles, including four editions of The Humanure Handbook. Jenkins hasΒ traveled the world teaching people how to make compost, like aΒ latter-day Johnny Compost Seed. Sometimes referred to as β€œThe Pope ofΒ Poop,” Jenkins prefers the more formal title of β€œAmbassador of Crap.”

Jenkins never wants to live without a garden – that’s why he learnedΒ how to turn shit into food. Humans produce their own soil fertility,Β usually on a daily basis, but most people don’t have a clue. TheΒ Humanure Handbook offers a glimpse into that hidden world.
