The Fairer Side of Buxton by Clare Gleeson explores the legacy of Alfred Buxton, a pivotal figure in the realm of landscape design in New Zealand. Buxton's rural gardens served as creative outlets for the wives of farmers, recreational spaces for families, and vibrant meeting places for communities. These gardens were not only aesthetic enhancements but also communal hubs where people could convene and connect.
Independent women engaged Buxton to design gardens for their own enjoyment and for the schools they were associated with. Additionally, mothers and wives played a vital role in raising funds for garden projects that would enhance memorials built to honour those lost in the Great War.
Clare Gleeson provides a compelling narrative of Alfred Buxton's contributions to Aotearoa's horticultural landscape, focusing on the influential roles played by women who supported and delighted in his work.

About the Author
Clare Gleeson is a Wellington historian and author. Her first book was Meet me at Begg's: the story of Charles Begg & Co, music and appliance manufacturers and retailers, 1861-1970 and she has published a range of articles on music-making and music retailing in New Zealand including on the Audioculture website. Clare's recent research has focused on Aotearoa's horticultural history and this has led to articles in a range of New Zealand and overseas publications, including New Zealand Gardener.
