Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The End explores the philosophical concept of 'the end', particularly in relation to the atrocities of the twentieth century and the claim that philosophy itself has ended. Alain Badiou, in dialogue with Giovanbattista Tusa, argues against resigning to this 'pathos of completion' and insists on the necessity of continued philosophical thought to challenge the totalising influence of global capitalism and the resulting nihilism.

The notion of ‘the end’ has long occupied philosophical thought. In light of the horrors of the twentieth century, some writers have gone so far as to declare the end of philosophy itself, emphasizing the impossibility of thinking after Auschwitz.

In The End, the distinguished philosopher Alain Badiou, in dialogue with Giovanbattista Tusa, argues that we must renounce ‘the pathos of completion’ and continue to think philosophically. To accept the atrocities of the twentieth century as marking the end of philosophy is intolerable precisely because it buys into the totalizing doctrines of the perpetrators. Badiou contends that philosophical thinking is needed now more than ever to counter the totalizing effects of globalized capitalism, which prescribes no objective for human life other than integration into its system, giving rise to a widespread sense of hopelessness and nihilism.

This book will appeal to the many followers of Badiou’s work and to anyone interested in contemporary philosophy and radical political theory.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Claire Colebrook, Penn State University: The End offers a lucid overview of Badiou's key ideas, such as the subject, event, and politics. The book navigates the nihilistic end times of contemporary capitalism and rethinks the conclusion of Western philosophy. Combining interview, dialogue, reflection, and essay, it is both engaging and provocative.
