The breathtaking new novel The City and Its Uncertain Walls explores the boundaries between worlds and individuals, written by the internationally bestselling author Haruki Murakami, renowned for 1Q84 and Kafka on the Shore. This intricately woven narrative pulls the reader into a dreamlike odyssey teeming with mystery, desire, and the metaphysical.

In a tale that defies the conventional, the story begins with a young man whose girlfriend mysteriously vanishes without a trace. Driven by love and an unwavering resolve, he embarks on a surreal quest to find the imaginary city where he believes her true self resides. His journey leads him to a remote library, a place that harbours its own enigmatic secrets and puzzles, reflecting Murakami’s iconic fascination with the surreal and the unknown.

Upon reaching the walled city, he discovers a fantastical realm devoid of shadows, filled with horned beasts and ancient willow trees. Here, in a place seemingly governed by dreams rather than strictures of reality, he finds his beloved. However, she resides in another library – a dream library – and has no recollection of their previous life together in the real world. As the lines between reality and fantasy blur, the protagonist is faced with a heartrending decision about what he is willing to lose in his pursuit of love and truth.

The City and Its Uncertain Walls is a multifaceted love story, a quest narrative, and an ode to books and the libraries that house them. It delves into the themes of memory, identity, and the elusive nature of human connections. Murakami's signature magical realism paints a world that is at once vividly tangible and enigmatically abstract, resonating deeply with the peculiar, often unsettling, nature of these contemporary times.

This novel not only reflects on the profound personal journey of its characters but also serves as a parable for the broader human experience, particularly in an era where the boundaries between the real and the virtual are increasingly fluid. Both longtime Murakami fans and newcomers to his work will find themselves captivated by the blend of melancholy, magic, and hope that pervades every page of The City and Its Uncertain Walls.

About the Author

In 1978, Haruki Murakami was twenty-nine and running a jazz bar in downtown Tokyo. One April day, the impulse to write a novel came to him suddenly while watching a baseball game. That first novel, Hear the Wind Sing, won a new writers' award and was published the following year. More followed, including A Wild Sheep Chase and Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, but it was Norwegian Wood, published in 1987, that turned Murakami from a writer into a phenomenon. In works such as The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, 1Q84, What I Talk About When I Talk About Running and Men Without Women, Murakami's distinctive blend of the mysterious and the everyday, of melancholy and humour, continues to enchant readers, ensuring his place as one of the world's most acclaimed and well-loved writers.
