Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
The Catcher in the Rye follows Holden Caulfield, a seventeen-year-old dropout newly expelled from his fourth school, as he navigates the bewildering challenges of growing up. With a voice that feels like a personal conversation, Holden exposes the pretences of the American Dream and the 'phony' aspects of society. The novel captures his disarming frankness and warm charisma as he struggles to find meaning in a world he often finds superficial and disingenuous. This timeless coming-of-age story remains a definitive classic of twentieth-century literature.

The Catcher in the Rye is ideal for readers interested in coming-of-age tales and those who resonate with themes of adolescent alienation and societal critique. It appeals especially to disaffected youth and anyone fascinated by the search for authenticity in a contrived world.

A 16-year old American boy tells what life is like for him at home and school, and reveals the workings of his own mind. What does a boy in his teens think and feel about his teachers, parents, friends and acquaintances?

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Salinger's style creates an effect of conversation; it is as though Holden is speaking to you personally, as though you too have seen through the pretences of the American Dream and are growing up unable to see the point of living in, or contributing to, the society around you.

The Catcher in the Rye is the ultimate novel for disaffected youth and has influenced countless coming-of-age stories since.

Holden Caulfield is a seventeen-year-old dropout who has just been kicked out of his fourth school. Navigating his way through the challenges of growing up, Holden dissects the 'phony' aspects of society and the 'phonies' themselves, such as the headmaster whose affability depends on the wealth of the parents, and his roommate who scores with girls using sickly-sweet affection.

Written with the clarity of a boy leaving childhood behind, it explores the world with disarming frankness and a warm, affecting charisma which has made this novel a universally loved classic of twentieth-century literature.

About the Author

J. D. Salinger was born in 1919 and died in January 2010. He grew up in New York City and wrote short stories from an early age, but his breakthrough came in 1948 with the publication in the New Yorker of 'A Perfect Day for Bananafish'. The Catcher in the Rye was his first and only novel, published in 1951. It remains one of the most translated, taught and reprinted texts, and has sold over 65 million copies worldwide. He went on to write three further, critically acclaimed, best-selling works of fiction- Franny and Zooey, For Esme - With Love And Squalor and Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters, and Seymour - An Introduction. Salinger continued to write throughout his life and left behind a large body of unpublished work.
