Kuang's acclaimed and award-winning Poppy War trilogy, The Burning God, presents a masterful blend of 20th-century Chinese history, mythology, and compelling world-building. This epic fantasy takes readers on a breathtaking journey through a land ravaged by war, where gods and monsters battle alongside mortals in an unforgettable tale of power, betrayal, and redemption.
After heroically defending her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and enduring a brutal civil war against the malevolent Empress Su Daji, Fang Runin, known as Rin, faces the ultimate betrayal by her former allies, leaving her on the brink of death. Despite her devastating losses, Rin's indomitable spirit remains unbroken. Determined to continue fighting for the people of the southern provinces and her home village of Tikany, Rin embarks on a challenging and transformative journey back to her roots.
Upon her return, Rin encounters both formidable challenges and unexpected opportunities. The Southern Coalition's leadership proves to be cunning and deceitful, yet Rin quickly realises that true power lies with the common people of Nikan, who eagerly seek retribution and view her as their divine saviour. Bolstered by the masses and her loyal Southern Army, Rin is prepared to wield every weapon at her disposal to eradicate the threats posed by the Dragon Republic, the colonising Hesperians, and any adversaries determined to suppress the ancient shamanic arts.
As Rin's power and influence continue to grow, she must confront an even greater challenge: the alluring and dangerous voice of the Phoenix, urging her to ignite a fire that could consume the entire world. With the fate of Nikan hanging in the balance, The Burning God explores whether Rin has the strength and resilience to resist the destructive call of the Phoenix, and ultimately, her own darkest impulses.
Filled with intense action, complex characters, and thought-provoking themes, The Burning God is a heart-pounding and emotionally charged finale that will leave readers both devastated and enthralled. Delve into this riveting narrative to discover the poignant and powerful conclusion to one of the most compelling fantasy series of the decade.
