The Arts Dividend
An impassioned and convincing case for the importance and rewards of public investment in arts and culture.
‘The arts create shared experiences that move us to laughter or tears; that increase our understanding of other people’s lives, that educate and entertain us. In short, it is the power of enlightenment.’ Sir Peter Bazalgette, former Chair of Arts Council England, 2012–16
Arts and culture make a hugely significant impact, enriching people’s lives in many ways. At a time when funding is frequently under threat, Darren Henley argues for the invaluable rewards to be gained from investment, and that we should not take our rich cultural heritage for granted.
The Arts Dividend is based on his reflections on England’s arts and culture landscape, and the remarkable creativity displayed across the country. As more and more people are encouraged and inspired to participate, and artistic work flourishes, the book looks in depth at the many benefits the arts can bring: encouraging creativity across all disciplines; advancing education; providing defining characteristics to places; having a positive impact on health and wellbeing; supporting innovation and technology; contributing to economic prosperity; and enhancing England’s reputation for cultural excellence.
