The Art of Chairmaking is the definitive guide to making Windsor chairs, with essential information on tools, materials and techniques.
The Art of Chairmaking by Jason Mosseri offers a comprehensive introduction to crafting Windsor chairs, which are recognised for their striking elegance, with legs mortised into the seat but not forming the backrest.
This book guides readers through every aspect of chairmaking, from selecting the appropriate wood and setting up a workshop, to using a lathe for creating ornate legs and forming a perfectly shaped seat. Detailed step-by-step photography and clear construction diagrams ensure each piece is made to the precise size, making it an invaluable resource for both aspiring and experienced chair-makers.
The Art of Chairmaking features projects for five classic furniture designs, including a three-legged round stool, a square table, a simple bench, a course armchair, and a comb back armchair.
Author Jason Mosseri studied at Kingston School of Art and the University of Brighton. He established his workshop in 2014 and began making chairs for private commissions, later launching Hopesprings Chairs in 2017. Trained by the internationally renowned Windsor chairmaker Curtis Buchanan in Tennessee, Jason specialises in using traditional tools and techniques to craft contemporary and sculptural chairs.
Alongside tutoring at West Dean College in West Sussex, UK, Jason is a QEST scholar, teaching on the Prince's Foundation Building Craft Programme. His work has been featured in numerous magazine articles. Jason also runs short chairmaking courses at his woodland workshop and was awarded a Sussex Countryside Award in 2020 for these courses.
The book includes 350 colour illustrations.
