Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Set in the volatile Paris summer of 1938, The Age of Reason captures the existential struggles of Mathieu Delarue, a philosophy teacher, and his eclectic circle of friends frequenting the cafés and bars of Montparnasse. Over the course of just two days, Mathieu grapples with his deeply-held beliefs about personal freedom and the repercussions of his romantic entanglements.

Mathieu has always prided himself on compartmentalising his life, neatly separating his intellectual pursuits from his sexual liaisons. This delicate balance, however, is shattered as he faces an urgent dilemma: he must raise 4,000 francs to obtain a safe abortion for his mistress, Marcelle. The quest for these funds forces him to confront his principles, the expectations of society, and his fears about the future.

Against this personal turmoil looms the broader historical context, as the distant but looming threat of the Second World War casts an uneasy shadow over his predicaments. This impending conflict subtly influences the characters' choices and heightens their sense of urgency and existential dread.

Jean-Paul Sartre deftly explores themes of freedom, responsibility, and the individual's role in society. Through vibrant characterisation and rich philosophical underpinnings, The Age of Reason provides an intimate look at the human condition as it teeters on the brink of monumental change.

As part of the iconic Popular Penguins series, this novel not only offers a riveting narrative but also serves as a quintessential introduction to Sartre's existentialist philosophy, making it a must-read for both literary enthusiasts and those interested in the profound questions of existence.

About the Author

Jean-Paul Sartre - one of the best-known and most discussed modern French writers and thinkers - was born in Paris in 1905. His friendship with Simone de Beauvoir, whom he met while studying philosophy at the Sorbonne, stretched over fifty years, until his death in 1980. He is perhaps best remembered as the founder of French existentialism and as a man of passion, fighting for what he believed in. Among his best known works are La Nausee (1938), Les Mouches (1943), Huis clos (1944) and the trilogy Les Chemins de la liberte; published in Penguin as The Age of Reason, The Reprieve and The Iron in the Soul. The Letters of Jean-Paul Sartre to Simone de Beauvoir 1926-1939 is also published by Penguin.
