State of Play

Contemporary 'High-End' Tv Drama
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
State of Play by Robin Nelson revisits and expands the discussions from his influential work TV Drama In Transition (1997). The book examines the aesthetics and construction of TV drama within a wide framework encompassing technology, institutions, economics, and cultural trends. Nelson explores the shift in value from distribution channels to content itself, offering an optimistic view of the future of quality TV drama in a global market. He critically addresses how certain notions of "quality" may privilege affluent viewers, potentially overlooking the global audience's desire for local relevance. The fusion of arts and cultural studies methodologies provides a distinctive and insightful perspective.

State of Play by Robin Nelson updates and develops the arguments of his influential TV Drama In Transition (1997). It is equally distinctive in setting analysis of the aesthetics and compositional principles of texts within a broad conceptual framework, including technologies, institutions, economics, and cultural trends.

Tracing "the great value shift from conduit to content" (Todreas, 1999), Nelson is relatively optimistic about the future quality of TV drama in a global marketplace. However, characteristically taking up questions of worth where others have avoided them, Nelson recognises that certain types of "quality" are privileged for viewers able to pay, possibly at the expense of viewer preference worldwide for "local" resonances in television.

The mix of arts and cultural studies methodologies makes for an unusual and insightful approach.

Matthew Hills, Senior Lecturer in Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University, praises State of Play for its detailed analysis of high-end TV drama qualities without relying on a singular definition of "quality." He highlights the book as a vibrant contribution to Television and Cultural Studies and a passionate argument for recognising contemporary television drama as part of a new "Golden Age."
