Scarface Claw, Hold Tight
Scarface Claw, Hold Tight
It is a peaceful morning, and Scarface Claw is enjoying a serene nap in a sunny spot, with his tail curled around him and his feet tucked in. Suddenly, the tranquillity is shattered:
"Suddenly, there was a shudder and sway, the whirr of an engine, then off and away."
The peaceful scene transforms into chaos as the truck, with Scarface Claw perched precariously on the roof, speeds down the drive. Unbeknownst to his owner Tom, who is oblivious to his stowaway passenger, Scarface Claw clings desperately as the truck weaves through the streets. Meanwhile, onlookers attempt to flag down Tom, embarking on a mission to rescue the poor, frightened feline.
The story is inspired by true accounts of cats inadvertently becoming rooftop passengers, adding a layer of relatability and charm. Lynley Dodd masterfully captures the tension and hilarity of the situation, ensuring readers are as engrossed in the narrative as the bystanders who are frantically trying to alert Tom.
This durable board book edition makes it ideal for young children, with sturdy pages that can withstand repeated readings and enthusiastic little hands. The captivating rhymes and vibrant illustrations will hold the attention of young readers and evoke both empathy and laughter as they follow Scarface's unexpected journey.
Recognised as one of the NZ Listener's 50 Best Books for Kids 2017, Scarface Claw, Hold Tight is a must-have for any child's library. This delightful tale of misadventure promises to become a bedtime favourite, bringing joy to both adults and children alike.

About the Author
Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work.'
