"He has grasped the falsity of the hedonistic attitude to life."

Orwell read Hitler-and believed him. In this blistering review from 1940, he lays out what most of polite society refused to face: that Hitler's appeal wasn't madness, but meaning. Not policy, but myth. While the democracies offered comfort and reason, Hitler offered blood, struggle, and the poetry of power-and people listened.

  • A Passion in the Desert
"They ended as all great passions do-by a misunderstanding." A French soldier escapes captivity and stumbles into something stranger than war: solitude, survival, and a wild intimacy with a panther in the sands of Egypt. What begins in fear turns to ritual, fascination, and a bond as mysterious as it is fatal. Balzac's tale is swift, elemental, and aching with...

  • Bullshit Jobs: A Work Rant
What if the modern economy is full of jobs that everyone secretly knows are meaningless-but no one is allowed to admit it? In this incendiary and darkly funny essay, anthropologist David Graeber takes a flamethrower to the world of pointless bureaucracy, soul-crushing middle management, and the quiet misery of workers paid to pretend. Bullshit Jobs is part polemic, part social...

  • The Discourse of Voluntary Servitude
"There are only four or five who maintain the dictator… not the six thousand but a hundred thousand, and even millions, cling to the tyrant by this cord to which they are tied." Tyranny is not imposed; it is invited. La Boétie maps how power metastasizes through favors, flattery, and fear-how millions bend the knee so a few can rise....

  • In Praise of Cosmetics
"Everything beautiful and noble is the result of reason and calculation." Nature, Baudelaire says, is ugly-and art is what saves us from it. This wicked, brilliant fragment defends makeup not as deception but as devotion: a ritual rebellion against decay, chance, and animal life. To paint the face is to reject nature's chaos and choose artifice-freely, proudly, and exquisitely.

  • Tyranny of Style
"If it is art, it is not for all, and if it is for all, it is not art." In this sharp, uncompromising address, he defends the composer's duty to the text: not to entertain, not to soothe, but to translate meaning with precision and depth. Music, he argues, must obey something higher than taste-something as exacting, and as rare,...

  • Justice in Palestine
A religious act cannot be performed with the aid of the bayonet or the bomb. In 1938, Mahatma Gandhi wrote a bracing and, at times, discomfiting essay on the claims of justice and nationhood in Palestine. • Whose Body?
With philosophical nerve and unforgettable thought experiments, Judith Jarvis Thomson's "A Defense of Abortion" transformed the moral debate on reproductive rights. First published in 1971, it became a cornerstone of modern moral philosophy, widely taught, fiercely debated, and endlessly cited. Few essays have so deeply shaped public discourse-or made abstract reasoning feel so urgently and disarmingly human.

  • On Being Ill
On Being Ill is introduced with the sentiment: "Always to have sympathy, always to be accompanied, always to be understood would be intolerable."
