See moreRefugee Wolf follows Big Bad Ben, a larrikin wolf seeking refugee status on the Planet of Straw, the Planet of Sticks, and the Planet of McSpaceMansions. Our anti-hero, who speaks Aussie slang, is at the heart of this speculative, dystopian satire set in 2500 AD. Big Bad Ben hurtles through space in a clapped-out space shuttle, relentlessly pursued by humans.
In a universe populated by surly porkers and characterised by excessive consumerism, the Super Hungry Pigs reject the wolf for arbitrary reasons. The story mirrors the allegorical, fairy tale structure of The Three Little Pigs, where the pigs repeatedly say "no" to the wolf, to reflect on how our society of excess has become increasingly inward-looking.
The universe of Refugee Wolf depicts a world of excess gone awry, being narcissistic in its consumption of a mythical world called Spacebook. This skewed sense of self arguably makes society fear "the other," which includes asylum seekers.
Endorsed by novelist and Patrick White 2016 award winner, Carmel Bird, the story is described as "a powerful, engaging, accessible exposition of the issue of Australia and refugees. Also very funny."
This is a special education edition and can serve as a guide for teachers to explain the symbols contained in the story. Additionally, it provides students with insights into the underlying meaning of the narrative.
