Playing with ... S

Playing with S is a resource book for Nursery Practitioners, Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Carers, Speech and Language Therapists, and Speech and Language Therapy Assistants, designed to help children articulate the 'S' sound in their speech. It offers activities, games, and ideas suitable for children aged from 3 to 7 years old. It can also be beneficial for older children with learning difficulties.

Each section provides simple, easy-to-follow instructions and practical tips to support children. The materials can be photocopied, and instructions are provided to assist in creating resources for activities. Progress sheets are included in each section to record progress in a fun and engaging way. Sample session plans are also part of the resource.

The resource is divided into eleven sections that follow the acquisition of speech sounds in typically developing children. These sections include:

• Mouth (oro-motor exercises)
• Single speech sound
• Short words that begin with the speech sound
• Longer words that begin with the speech sound 'S'
• Words that end with the speech sound
• Words that begin or end with 'S' and have more than one syllable
• Words that have the speech sound 'S' in the middle
• Opportunities to use all the words presented in the resource within phrases and sentences through various activities and games
• Instructions and resources for games to provide extra practice, using words from all sections of the book
• Ideas for working on the 'S' sound in words and sentences within nursery, classroom, and home settings
