Orphic Collection delves into the rich tapestry of Orpheus's legacy, who is renowned from Greek mythology as a peerless bard. As the Thracian son of a Muse, Orpheus possessed superhuman musical abilities, famously using them to attempt to rescue his young wife, Eurydice, from Hades, though ultimately losing her on their journey back to the living world.

Beyond myth, Orpheus was considered an authentic poet, esteemed as a predecessor to Hesiod and Homer, and compared to Musaeus. He was credited with poems, oracles, and the founding of rituals that sustained a vibrant tradition from Archaic Greece through the Roman Empire and beyond.

Essentially Dionysiac in nature, Orphism distinguished itself through a focus on theogony, cosmogony, and the origin and destiny of souls, eschewing violence and blood sacrifice. Although flexible and capable of significant transformation over time, the tradition retained core elements that lent coherence to the works and rituals attributed to Orpheus. This enduring coherence was achieved without dogma or control by priests or cult, making Orphism both distinctive and open.

Orphism's adaptability allowed it to merge seamlessly with various religious and philosophical systems, notably the Pythagorean and Neoplatonist, as well as Judaic and Christian traditions. Despite its departure from conventional accounts, it offered a profound and fascinating perspective.

This edition of the Orphic Collection gathers works representing the most ancient Orphic literature, intentionally excluding the later mythological, scientific, and pseudo-scientific poems opportunistically attributed to Orpheus.
