Summary

Her sensual Nanas—buxom, colourful female figures—established Niki de Saint Phalle's international acclaim far beyond the traditional art sphere. Yet, the self-taught artist's creative range is much wider, embracing painting, drawing, assemblages, performances, theatre, film, and architecture. Her unconventional oeuvre is deeply subversive and critically challenges social and political norms. Through her art, she confronts institutions and role models with a sharpness and relevance that endure today. This exhibition and book illuminate the complex personality behind the work, revealing an oeuvre that is surprising, eccentric, emotional, dark, brutal, humorous, and joyous.

Description

Her sensual Nanas—buxom, colourful female figures—laid the foundation for her international success beyond the art world: Niki de Saint Phalle. But the self-taught artist's creative spectrum is much broader, and her unconventional oeuvre, ranging from painting and drawing to assemblages, performances, theatre, film, and architecture, is more subversive and critical of society than is widely assumed.

Based on her efforts to process her own feelings, she addressed social and political issues, critically questioning institutions and role models in ways that are as relevant today as they have ever been. The exhibition and the publication shed new light on the artist's exceptional personality and uncover the wide-ranging oeuvre of the popular outsider—always surprising and eccentric, emotional, dark and brutal, yet humorous and cheerful.

The Iliad

When Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey appeared in 2017—revealing the ancient poem in a contemporary idiom that was "fresh, unpretentious and lean" (Madeline Miller, Washington Post)—critics lauded it as "a revelation" (Susan Chira, New York Times) and "a cultural landmark" (Charlotte Higgins, Guardian) that would forever change how Homer is read in English. Now Wilson has returned with an...
