Following in the footsteps of Celine and Joyce, and anticipating the gritty worldview of Burroughs and Bukowski . . .
Following in the footsteps of Céline and Joyce, and anticipating the gritty worldview of Burroughs and Bukowski, My Little War by Louis Paul Boon is a seminal piece of post-war literature.
The novel presents a series of vignettes that blend autobiography with fiction, offering a poignant, often darkly comedic take on a society ravaged by conflict. Boon's narrative, marked by its stark realism and profound empathy, captures the absurdity and tragedy of war, articulating the shared human experience with a raw and unflinching honesty.
Characterised by its innovative style and unorthodox structure, My Little War remains a compelling read that challenges conventional storytelling and highlights the enduring power of the human spirit amidst the chaos of history.
With its deft exploration of themes such as trauma, survival, and the relentless passage of time, this work is an enduring testament to Boon's literary genius and his keen insights into the human condition.

Esteemed for its raw and innovative style, this work has been hailed as 'by far the best thing produced by post-war Belgian literature' (Marnix Gijsen).
Critics note Boon's "blitz technique", likening it to a machine-gun's rapid-fire to depict the chaotic wartime atmosphere (R. F. Lissens).
Jim Ruland praises it as an anti-epic, focusing more on the shared misfortunes of common people than personal tragedy.
