"Money and Class in America: Notes and Observations on Our Civil Religion was first published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson, New York, in 1988"--Title pages verso.
Extensively expanded and revised, with a new foreword by Thomas Frank
In the United States, happiness and wealth are often regarded as synonymous. Consumerism, greed, and the insatiable desire for more are American obsessions. In the native tradition of Twain, Veblen, and Mencken, the editor of Lapham's Quarterly here examines our fascination with the ubiquitous green goddess.
Focusing on the wealthy sybarites of New York City, whom Lewis H. Lapham has been able to observe firsthand in their natural habitat, Money and Class in America is a caustic, and often hilarious, portrait of a segment of the American population who, in the thirty years since the book was originally written, have become only further removedβboth in terms of wealth and social awarenessβfrom everyone else.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Praise for Money and Class in America: Thomas Frank commends Lapham's elegant prose that makes the book a pleasure to read. Kurt Vonnegut regards Lapham as "our greatest satirist." George Plimpton hails him as "the most provocative and engaging essayist in the country." Reviews highlight the book as a sardonic, moralistic, and witty reflection on American culture and political life, with the New York Times Book Review noting Lapham's unsparing and witty ruminations.
