Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837β1909) is, alongside Browning and Tennyson, one of the touchstone Victorian poets. He was not only a major critic but also an important fiction writer. Emerging from the Pre-Raphaelite circle, his bold and innovative work made him both a celebrated and controversial writer in his homeland and a figure of international importance. Among his great admirers were Hugo, Baudelaire, and MallarmΓ©.
Jerome McGann and Charles L. Sligh now present a generous sampling of Swinburne's poetry and prose in Major Poems and Selected Prose. This wide-ranging collection satisfies a long-acknowledged need for a comprehensive selection of Swinburne's work. It is accompanied by learned and critically incisive commentaries and notes.
