Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909) is, alongside Browning and Tennyson, one of the touchstone Victorian poets. He was not only a major critic but also an important fiction writer. Emerging from the Pre-Raphaelite circle, his bold and innovative work made him both a celebrated and controversial writer in his homeland and a figure of international importance. Among his great admirers were Hugo, Baudelaire, and MallarmΓ©.
