Description
In this new book, Bauman examines how we have moved away from a 'heavy' and 'solid', hardware-focused modernity to a 'light' and 'liquid', software-based modernity. This passage, he argues, has brought profound change to all aspects of the human condition. The new remoteness and un-reachability of global systemic structure coupled with the unstructured and under-defined, fluid state of the immediate setting of life-politics and human togetherness, call for the rethinking of the concepts and cognitive frames used to narrate human individual experience and their joint history.
This book is dedicated to this task. Bauman selects five of the basic concepts which have served to make sense of shared human life - emancipation, individuality, time/space, work and community - and traces their successive incarnations and changes of meaning.
Liquid Modernity concludes the analysis undertaken in Bauman's two previous books Globalization: The Human Consequences and In Search of Politics. Together these volumes form a brilliant analysis of the changing conditions of social and political life by one of the most original thinkers writing today.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Bauman is regarded as one of the most stimulating and original social thinkers of our time. According to the Times Higher Education Supplement, even on a bad day, his insights surpass those of most contemporary social theorists. The Times Literary Supplement praises his vivid writing and original perspective on modernity's shifting conditions. Contemporary Politics ranks him alongside giants of sociology, recognising his moral passion and ability to define the spirit of the age through thought-provoking analysis.

On the World and Ourselves
Unde malum—from where does evil come? That is the question that has plagued humankind ever since Eve, seduced by the serpent, tempted Adam to taste the forbidden fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Throughout history, the awareness of good and evil has always been linked to the awareness of choice and to the freedom and responsibility...Paperback$3799Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Postmodern Ethics
Zygmunt Bauman's powerful and persuasive study of the postmodern perspective on ethics is particularly welcome. For Bauman the great issues of ethics have lost none of their topicality: they simply need to be seen, and dealt with, in a wholly new way. Our era, he suggests, may actually represent a dawning, rather than a twilight, for ethics.Paperback$8399Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Culture and Art
The sociological imagination and the artistic imagination have been historically intertwined, at once reciprocal and conflicting, complementary and tensional. This connection is nowhere more apparent than in the work of Zygmunt Bauman. His conception and practice of sociology were always infused with a literary and artistic sensibility. He wrote extensively on the relationship between sociology and the arts, and especially...Paperback$4499Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
History and Politics
A victim of the Nazis, then the communists. Twice a refugee, yet always remaining a committed socialist. My Life in Fragments
Zygmunt Bauman was one of the great social thinkers of our time: inventor of the idea of liquid modernity, he transformed our way of thinking about the social conditions shaping our lives today. His own life was shaped by the great social forces that scarred the second half of the twentieth century – war, communism, antisemitism, forced migration. His work...Hardback$3099Elsewhere:$4799Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -

This is not a Diary
This is not a Diary: while these observations were recorded in autumn 2010 and spring 2011 in the form of dated entries, they are not a personal reflection but an attempt to capture signs of our times in their movement—possibly at birth, at a stage when they are still barely perceptible, and in any case before they have matured into...Paperback$3799Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
In Praise of Literature
In this new book, In Praise of Literature, Zygmunt Bauman and Riccardo Mazzeo examine the contentious issue of the relation between literature (and the arts in general) and sociology (or, more generally, a branch of the humanities claiming scientific status). Management in a Liquid Modern World
Management has been one of the driving forces of the last century, indeed an idea and a language that colonised most other institutions, areas of human activity, and walks of life. Some it supported and others it destroyed, but there are few areas...Paperback$3599Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
Sketches in the Theory of Culture
Sketches in the Theory of Culture is a remarkable work by all measures. Written by Zygmunt Bauman when he was still a professor in Poland, and originally intended for publication in 1968, it was suppressed by the Polish government during the wave of repression following the protests in March of that year. For decades, it was thought to be lost....Paperback$4299Unit price /UnavailableAvailableShips in 3-4 weeks -
