Description
Diodorus Siculus, a Greek historian from Agyrium in Sicily, active approximately 80–20 BCE, authored forty books of world history under the title Library of History. This work is structured in three parts: mythical history of various peoples, both non-Greek and Greek, up until the Trojan War; history covering the period up to Alexander the Great's death in 323 BCE; and history leading up to 54 BCE.
Of the original volumes, we have complete Books I–V, which cover Egyptians, Assyrians, Ethiopians, and Greeks, as well as Books XI–XX, detailing Greek history from 480–302 BCE. Additionally, fragments of the remaining books are still extant. Although Diodorus is known for being an uncritical compiler, he utilised reputable sources and reproduced their content with fidelity. His work is invaluable for its details that are recorded nowhere else and serves as evidence for various now-lost works, especially those by Ephorus, Apollodorus, Agatharchides, Philistus, and Timaeus.
