Description
Diodorus Siculus, a Greek historian from Agyrium in Sicily, lived approximately between 80–20 BCE. He authored forty books of world history, titled Library of History, divided into three parts: the mythical history of peoples, both non-Greek and Greek, up to the Trojan War; history leading up to Alexander's death in 323 BCE; and history until 54 BCE.
In his collection, we possess complete Books I–V, which cover Egyptians, Assyrians, Ethiopians, and Greeks, as well as Books XI–XX, detailing Greek history from 480–302 BCE. Fragments of the remaining books also survive. Although considered an uncritical compiler, Diodorus relied on reputable sources and reproduced them faithfully. His work is valuable for preserving details not recorded elsewhere and providing evidence for previously lost works, notably those by Ephorus, Apollodorus, Agatharchides, Philistus, and Timaeus.
