Diodorus Library of History, written in the first century BCE, is the most extensively preserved history by an ancient Greek author. The work is in three parts: mythical history to the Trojan War; history to Alexander s death (323 BCE); history to 54 BCE. Books 1 5 and 11 20 survive complete, the rest in fragments.
Diodorus Siculus, a Greek historian from Agyrium in Sicily, around 80β20 BCE, authored forty books of world history known as Library of History. This work is divided into three parts: mythical history of both non-Greek and Greek peoples up to the Trojan War; history until Alexander's death in 323 BCE; and history up to 54 BCE.
We have complete Books IβV, which cover the Egyptians, Assyrians, Ethiopians, and Greeks, as well as Books XIβXX, detailing Greek history from 480β302 BCE. Additionally, there are fragments of the remaining books. Although Diodorus was an uncritical compiler, he utilised high-quality sources and faithfully reproduced them. His work is invaluable for details that are not recorded elsewhere and serves as evidence for works now lost, especially those of Ephorus, Apollodorus, Agatharchides, Philistus, and Timaeus.
The Loeb Classical Library edition of Library of History by Diodorus Siculus is available in twelve volumes.
