Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Keith Haring captures the vibrant spirit of the iconic American artist known for his bold, colourful paintings and graffiti-inspired artworks. Emerging in the bustling New York art scene of the early 1980s, Haring's distinct cartoon-like images were influenced by pop and club culture, as well as historical art forms such as Islamic and Japanese art and primitive wall-paintings. This book presents around fifty key works alongside rare archival photographs, exploring Haring's profound activism on issues like the AIDS crisis, Cold War tensions, racism, capitalism, and environmental concerns.

Through three insightful essays and a detailed timeline of 1980s socio-political events, readers gain a fresh understanding of Haring's artistic response to the era's cultural upheavalsβ€”from Reagan's election to the rise of hip hop and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

An energetic and eye-opening new exploration of the work of iconic American artist Keith Haring.

Keith Haring (1958-1990) is widely recognised for his colourful paintings, drawings, sculptures and murals. Haring exploded onto the early 1980s New York art scene with his vivid graffiti-inspired drawings, many of which found exposure in the public realm, such as the Times Square billboard broadcast of his famous Radiant Child in 1982.

Haring's instantly recognisable 'cartoon-like' imagery not only drew on the iconography of contemporary pop and club culture but also looked back to the patterns and rhythms of Islamic and Japanese art, and primitive wall-paintings. Furthermore, his work also reflected a profound commitment to social justice and activism, raising numerous issues that remain relevant today, including the AIDS crisis, the Cold War and fear of nuclear attack, racism, the excesses of capitalism, and environmental degradation.

Featuring around fifty works supported by rarely seen archival photographs, this revelatory book will not only introduce Haring to a new audience but also throw fresh light on an artist whose work remains symptomatic of the subcultural and creative energy of 1980s New York. Three short texts exploring various aspects of Haring's practice are interspersed with illustrations of his works.

A rolling timeline features key social and political events of the 1980sβ€” from the election of Reagan in 1980 and the explosion of hip hop from underground movement to global phenomenon to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989β€” and Haring's responses to them.
