Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Illuminating Natural History explores the life and work of Mark Catesby (1683–1749), an 18th-century English artist, explorer, naturalist, and author. At a time when science was transitioning from amateur virtuosi to professional experts, Catesby undertook extended travels in the New World, documenting the flora and fauna of Virginia, South Carolina, and the Bahamas. The book focuses on his pioneering work, Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first large-format, colour-plate natural history book of North America. This volume combines art history, history of science, natural history illustration, and colonial history, enriched by unpublished images and letters, alongside detailed accounts of his collecting methods and the logistics of transporting specimens across the Atlantic.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

This book explores the life and work of the 18th-century English artist, explorer, naturalist, and author Mark Catesby (1683–1749). During Catesby’s lifetime, science was poised to shift from a world of amateur virtuosi to one of professional experts. He worked against a backdrop of global travel that incorporated collecting and direct observation of nature.

Catesby spent two prolonged periods in the New World—in Virginia (1712–19) and South Carolina and the Bahamas (1722–26)—which he documented in Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, the first large-format, colour-plate book on the natural history of North America.

Interweaving elements of art history, history of science, natural history illustration, painting materials, book history, paper studies, garden history, and colonial history, this volume brings together a wealth of unpublished images as well as previously unpublished letters by Catesby, with contemporary accounts of his collecting and encounters in the wild, and details of the materials and techniques of packing and transporting plants and animals across the Atlantic.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Praised by The Times as a vivid documentation of early American flora and fauna with beautifully reproduced watercolours, Rachel Campbell-Johnston notes the book captures a world where art and science overlapped. Christoph Irmscher in the Wall Street Journal calls it the definitive, accessible, and gorgeous study of Catesby’s life and imagination. The Society of Antiquaries of London Online Newsletter highlights McBurney's meticulous research which illuminates the role of art and artists in exploring the natural world.
