Ianua Indica (Indian Gateway) by Ignazio Arcamone S.J. (circa 1615-1683) is recognised as the first comparative grammar of two South Asian vernaculars: Konkani and Marathi. This volume presents a critical edition of the original Latin text based on the two surviving manuscripts, along with an English translation.
The book includes a selection of extracts from sources that illuminate its genesis and significance, such as part of an unpublished work by the British orientalist John Leyden (1775-1811) entitled "Plan for Investigating the Languages, Literatures, Antiquities and History of the Deccan."
An extended introduction provides insight into this overlooked milestone in the history of Indology. It outlines Arcamone's use of "Jesuit world philology" techniques and explores the intellectual formation of the author both in Italy and India.
