Harzburger Hof

The Story of a Grand Hotel
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Harzburger Hof traces the rich history of one of Germany's five largest and most prestigious hotels, a social microcosm reflecting its era. From its opening in 1874 as the ducal "Actien-Hotel," through its vibrant cultural role in the 1920s, military use during wartime, and post-war revival, the hotel mirrors the shifting tides of German society. The book also situates the hotel's story within the broader development of grand hotels, tourism in the Harz region, and architectural history, leading up to the contemporary plans for its successor, the Grand Hotel "Harzburger Hof".

A Gran Hotel with an amazing past and glorious days ahead

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

The Harzburger Hof was not only one of the five largest and most prestigious hotels in Germany; it was also a social microcosm and a mirror of its time. Opened in 1874 as the ducal "Actien-Hotel", it experienced a series of peaks and troughs of fortune in the 20th century.

A sophisticated place for recuperation during the days of empire, The Harzburger Hof became a centre of cultural life in the 1920s. Later, it served as a military hospital and then as an office for the occupation forces after the war. Its social life was revived in the 1960s and 1970s.

After structural and economic decline in the 1980s and 1990s, the hotel was closed. Following a series of fires, demolition was the only option.

In preparation for the brand new Grand Hotel Harzburger Hof, Ulf Meyer places the past and future of the building in the context of the development of grand hotels, tourism in the Harz region, and contemporary and architectural history.
