Segal's sculptures stand out as unmistakable and inimitable, solidifying his place among the most compelling artists of twentieth-century art. He skillfully combined a respect for tradition with a modern voice. His unique method of casting live models with plaster and gauze, coupled with the integration of these ghostly white figures and everyday objects, was groundbreaking, earning him fame in 1962.
Including over 75 illustrations, George Segal: Themes and Variations presents Segal as a radical experimenter, a traditionalist, and a tireless innovator. His versatility is showcased in his works across paint, photography, printmaking, charcoal, and pastel.

About the Author
Donna Gustafson, PhD, is Chief Curator and Curator for Art of the Americas at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. She has published broadly on modern and contemporary American art. Her most recent project was a collaboration with archivist Lisbet Tellefsen on an exhibition that mixed contemporary art with archival materials to explore the visual iconicity and continuing importance of Angela Davis.
