Gardens Are For People, Third edition encapsulates the design philosophy of Thomas Church, a pivotal figure in modern Californian garden design. The book offers practical guidance, enriched with site plans and photographs from over 2000 gardens Church designed. As a fusion of traditional and modern principles, it highlights how Church's work diverged from East Coast traditions to embrace California's unique climate, landscape, and lifestyle. Church saw gardens as natural extensions of the home, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor living spaces.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

This text contains the essence of Thomas Church's design philosophy, as well as practical advice. It is illustrated by site plans and photographs of some of the 2000 gardens that Church designed during his career.

Called the "last great traditional designer and the first great modern designer", Church was one of the central figures in the development of the modern Californian garden. For the first time, West Coast designers based their work not on imitation of East Coast traditions, but on climatic, landscape and lifestyle characteristics unique to California and the West.

Church viewed the garden as a logical extension of the house, with one extending naturally into the other.

Gardens Are For People, Third Edition by Thomas D. Church, Michael Laurie, and Grace Hall offers readers a comprehensive look into these pioneering ideas.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

"Landscape architect Thomas Church [wrote] for contemporaries when he wrote Gardens Are for People. . . . Now that Church's book has been reissued in paperback, a new generation can learn about his influential, indeed revolutionary, California Style. Church, who helped transform opinion about gardens in the post-World War II era, was designing for American families and their real activities." — House Beautiful
