A single decision is enough to fundamentally, genuinely fundamentally, rethink and change everything.

Gabriele Rothemann: Works (Bilingual edition) showcases photographs that do not merely depict an object or situation, but rather unveil the unseen. Each photograph reflects a relationship to things long gone, connections to times past, and spaces lost. Embedded in each image are the echoes of other images, presenting a wealth of possibilities in how the world can be perceived and represented.

Since 1984, the Vienna-based artist has manipulated the medium of photography in a way that enlivens the object with imagination, rather than freezing it. Rothemann's work explores existential questions, particularly the fundamental one: the finitude of life. Her work ranges from abstract to precise and is richly detailed. Her series, from Dead Animals to Miniatures about Disappearance, evokes a haunting presence, reaching out to the empathy of viewers through the sensual quality of her imagery, its clear-cut visual language, and expressive beauty.
