An uplifting vision of a new, egalitarian liberalism, Free and Equal by Daniel Chandler presents a bold and practical programme to reinvigorate democracy and transform capitalism. This compelling book begins by examining the enormous challenges and widespread dissatisfaction with the current status quo. Despite these difficulties, coherent visions for a better, fairer society are hard to find.

Free and Equal fills this gap by offering an insightful roadmap to a more just society. In his ambitious and exhilarating debut, Chandler — a philosopher and economist — argues that the ideas we need are already available to us in the works of the twentieth century's greatest political philosopher, John Rawls. While Rawls's ideas have revolutionised philosophy, they have had limited political impact — until now. Chandler uses Rawls's humane and egalitarian liberalism as a foundation to build a compelling case for a progressive agenda that seeks to reshape our political and economic institutions fundamentally.

This book is teeming with hope and possibility. It offers a much-needed antidote to the cynicism prevalent in modern politics, presenting what Chandler calls a "realistic utopia." The vision outlined in Free and Equal has the potential to galvanise individuals from all walks of life and inspire substantial, positive change in contemporary debate.

Chandler's work meticulously constructs an argument for a modern egalitarian liberalism that could serve as a touchstone for years to come. This crucial narrative not only emboldens John Rawls's place in political discourse but also firmly establishes Chandler as an essential new voice for our time. His ideas prompt readers to rethink the possibilities of a fairer world, making Free and Equal an invigorating and essential read for anyone interested in a future that champions equality and democratic integrity.
