Two novellas about domestic life, isolation, and the passing of time by one of the finest Italian writers of the twentieth century.

Family and Borghesia presents two captivating stories that delve into the intricacies of human connection and the inexorable passage of time.

In Family, Carmine, an architect, and Ivana, a translator, once shared a life together and even had a child. Yet, after the child’s tragic death, their relationship crumbled, leading Carmine to marry Ninetta. Together, Carmine and Ninetta have a child, Dod, whom Carmine views as somewhat uninspired. Despite this, Carmine continues to spend every evening with Ivana, with no objections from Ninetta. Initially comic, this novella gradually darkens, exploring how time moves forward, lives continue, and people linger around missed opportunities, only creating more regrets until time ultimately runs out.

Borghesia revolves around a widow who continuously acquires and loses Siamese cats, hoping they will alleviate her loneliness. This story also examines the emotional entanglements and domestic complexities that emerged with the loosening social norms of the 1970s. One character reflects on the inevitabilities of life, pondering, "She remembered saying that there were three things in life you should always refuseβ€”hypocrisy, resignation, and unhappiness. But it was impossible to shield yourself from those three things. Life was full of them and there was no holding them back."

Family and Borghesia by Natalia Ginzburg captivates with its simplicity and raw beauty, often compared to a bright light in modern Italian literature. The prose is praised for being brutally honest and clear, evoking both introspective reflection and a vivid portrayal of shared experiences. Reviewers highlight Ginzburg’s unique ability to capture everyday life’s deep sorrows and pleasures with wit, wisdom, and a distinctive voice that remains remarkably engaging and heartfelt.

About the Author

Natalia Ginzburg (1916-1991) was born Natalia Levi in Sicily, the daughter of a Jewish biologist father and a Catholic mother. She grew up in Turin, in a household that was a salon for antifascist activists, intellectuals, and artists, and published her first short stories at the age of eighteen; she would go on to become one of the most important and widely taught writers in Italy, taking up the themes of oppression, family, and social change. In 1938, she married Leone Ginzburg, a prominent writer, activist, and editor. In 1940, the fascist government exiled the Ginzburgs and their children to a remote village. After the fall of Mussolini, Leone fled to Rome, where he was arrested by Nazi authorities and tortured to death. Natalia married Gabriele Baldini, an English professor, in 1950, and spent the next three decades in Rome, London, and Turin, writing dozens of novels, plays, and essay. NYRB Classics is the publisher of her novelFamily Lexiconand two novellas,Valentino and Sagittarius. Beryl Stockman is a translator, poet, and professional psychic and Tarot reader. She lives in London. Eric Gudas is the author ofBest Western and Other Poems. His work has appeared inThe American Poetry Review, The Iowa Review, Poetry Flash, Raritan, and elsewhere.

  • The Dry Heart
The Dry Heart begins and ends with the matter-of-fact pronouncement: 'I shot him between the eyes.' As the taleβ€”a plunge into the chilly waters of loneliness, desperation, and revengeβ€”proceeds, the narrator's murder of her flighty husband takes on a certain logical inevitability. Stripped of any preciousness or sentimentality, Natalia Ginzburg's writing here is white-hot, tempered by rage. She transforms the...
