Fallout by Sara Paretsky follows the journey of V.I. Warshawski, who is persuaded by her impossible god-daughter Bernie to search for August, a young filmmaker who has mysteriously disappeared. The clues lead V.I. to Kansas, where August was last seen in the company of Emerald, an older black movie actress intent on filming the story of her life.

V.I.'s search takes her from the military base where Emerald was born to the farm where she grew up, located outside a university town. As V.I. digs deeper, she uncovers both past and present-day secrets.

What is occurring at the former nuclear missile site next to the farm? What transpired there in 1983, when students attempted to create their own version of Greenham Common? Everywhere V.I. turns, she finds more trouble and not a trace of August or Emerald. Then, trouble turns to death...
