Ethics in the Real World
Packed with sharp insights and meticulous reasoning, Ethics in the Real World by Peter Singer challenges readers to consider how their values and beliefs align with their actions. This thought-provoking collection of essays delves into a multitude of pressing ethical issues, offering a clear-eyed examination that questions our assumptions and reveals the complexity of modern ethical dilemmas.
This fully updated and expanded edition features 37 new essays, reflecting the evolving landscape of ethical concerns in today's society. Singer covers an impressive range of topics, discussing everything from the implications of free speech and the impact of fake news to the moral considerations around stopping autocratic leaders like Putin. In the context of recent global events, he also explores the ethics surrounding pandemics and climate change, urging readers to think critically about their role in addressing these crises.
With characteristic clarity and incisiveness, Singer tackles issues of extreme poverty, abortion, euthanasia, and sports doping, providing compelling arguments that challenge conventional viewpoints. He addresses the ethics of selling kidneys, the pursuit of happiness, and even the seemingly unrelated act of climbing Mt Everest. The book doesn't shy away from the less commonly discussed moral questions, such as the parenting style of elephants and our relationship with kangaroos, illustrating the breadth of ethical considerations in both human and animal contexts.
Singer's influence as one of the world's most prominent philosophers is evident as he brings his trademark analysis to these real-world matters. Each essay in Ethics in the Real World is designed to provoke thought and inspire a deeper understanding of ethical principles, encouraging readers to confront their own beliefs and consider new perspectives. Whether you agree with his conclusions or not, Singer's essays are bound to ignite meaningful dialogue and prompt personal reflection.
This collection is not just for academics or philosophers; it is for anyone who has ever grappled with ethical questions in their daily life. The essays are accessible yet profound, making complex ideas understandable and relevant. Ethics in the Real World is an essential read for those who wish to navigate the ethical challenges of our time with greater awareness and moral clarity.
