'Elvie the Exceptional City Sheep' is a story inspired by some true events in Elvie's life. She really did live in the Pollock's back yard in Kilbirnie which she really did escape from and she did go to the Kilbirnie School pet show... Just - not quite like this. Above all - Elvie was an 'Exceptional City Sheep'.

  • Based on the true story of Elvie, an unforgettable sheep who lived in a suburban backyard instead of on a farm.
  • A charming, humorous picture book celebrating curiosity, individuality, and seeing the world from a unique perspective.
  • Beautifully illustrated by Emma Lay, bringing Elvie’s New Zealand neighbourhood adventures to life for young readers and classrooms.

Elvie the sheep is back – and more outrageous than ever!

Elvie the Exceptional City Sheep is inspired by the true story of Elvie, a much-loved sheep who really did live in the Pollock family’s backyard in Kilbirnie. She really did escape from home and attend Kilbirnie School’s Pet Day – just not quite like this!

The story also features familiar faces from the school community, including staff and student Tilly, who lived on the same street as Elvie, along with characters inspired by organisations that have supported author Colleen Brown throughout her writing journey.

Above all, Elvie was an ‘Exceptional City Sheep’.
