DescriptionWith nearly 40 million record sales, three albums topping the Billboard charts, a Grammy win, and a legion of fans, System of a Down is one of the biggest metal bands on the planet. At their core has always been Serj Tankian, whose journey from the war-torn streets of Beirut to the throbbing heart of rock superstardom is as extraordinary and unique as they come.
In Down with the System, Serj Tankian delves into his diverse and eventful life, retracing his remarkable journey with a keen eye on the events that shaped him both as an artist and an activist. This compelling memoir provides an in-depth look at the personal and professional experiences that influenced his worldview and creative output. Readers are taken on a transformative ride—beginning with Tankian's early life as an immigrant in Los Angeles, through the founding and meteoric rise of System of a Down, to his solo ventures and unwavering commitment to social justice.
By sheer grit, circumstance, struggle, and a wealth of talent, Serj Tankian has lived an extraordinary life. He shares not only the highs and lows of being in a world-famous rock band but also his introspective thoughts on the intertwining of art, music, and activism. Whether he is teaming up with fellow musician Tom Morello to advocate for social justice, debating with LAPD officers on managing impassioned fans, or exploring the rich culinary landscape of Armenia with Anthony Bourdain, Tankian offers readers a fascinating narrative that is both personal and universally resonant.
Down with the System is more than just the story of a rock star; it is an immigrant's tale of perseverance and identity, an activist's call to action, and a musician's reflection on the transformative power of art. With moments of humour, gravity, and profound insight, Serj Tankian's memoir is a riveting read that stands as a testament to the impact one individual can make in the world. Whether you are a long-time fan of System of a Down, a music enthusiast, or someone interested in personal stories of triumph and advocacy, this book promises an unforgettable journey through the life of one of rock's most intriguing figures.
