About the Author

Jan Ramage is a Perth-based primary school teacher and has been involved with running Professional Development sessions on literacy and writing, speaking engagements, festivals and workshops with various schools around Perth since her first book, Eyes in the Night, illustrated by Laura Peterson, was published and won the Crichton award for illustration in 2006. Her second children’s book, Tuart Dwellers, was a CBCA Notable Book, shortlisted for the Eve Pownall Award and won the Wilderness Society Environmental Award in 2009; her third, Stranded, which was illustrated by Mark Wilson, was shortlisted for the Wilderness Society Environmental Award in 2011; and her fourth book, Deepsea Whale Rescue, also illustrated by Mark Wilson, won the Whitley Zoological Award in 2013. Jan has also contributed articles and poems to Landscope, the WA’s Conservation, Parks and Wildlife magazine.

Brian Simmonds is a Perth-based full-time artist who has studied fine art in many mediums and subjects for over fifty years. He worked for many years as a lithographer in the printing industry for various companies before becoming a professional artist in 1990, earning a living by busking as a portrait artist in galleries, hotel lobbies, and even on a Mediterranean cruise ship. He has exhibited in many showings and won numerous prizes and awards for drawing, oil painting, and mixed media works throughout his career, and his work can be found in many public and private collections across Australia. Brian has also taught drawing and painting courses for the University of Western Australia and currently teaches β€˜Art for Recreation’ at his own organisation .
He was nominated for the Children’s Book Council of Australia Crichton Award for best new illustrator for his contribution to Lighthouse Girl in 2010; his own coffee table books of paintings, The River and Rottnest Island, were recent successes; and his previous picture book, Light Horse Boy was a CBCA Honour Book and winner of the children’s book category in the WA Premier’s Book Awards in 2015.
