Did You Know? Its duck-like bill is made of very sensitive skin and is able to detect insect prey underwater. Unusually for a mammal, a mum platypus lays eggs rather than giving birth to babies. The newly hatched young are called puggles. The male has a sharp claw on its back leg that can inject extremely painful venom.
