Design for Sustainability

A Sourcebook of Integrated Ecological Solutions
Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Design for Sustainability explores radical and innovative design solutions that envision buildings and settlements functioning like gardensβ€”purifying air and water, generating energy, treating sewage, and producing food, all at reduced costs. Janis Birkeland introduces a systems design approach that bridges academic and professional boundaries, integrating social and physical sciences to tackle environmental and social challenges. This sourcebook pairs diverse readings on key topics, encouraging comparison, debate, and a transdisciplinary perspective on environmental management and social change.

The book presents examples of integrated systems design derived from ecological principles and showcases leading practices across industrial design, materials, housing, urban planning, transport, landscape permaculture, and resource management.
