Belonging Together

Book Hero Magic crafted this summary to help describe this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Summary
Belonging Together by Patrick Sullivan examines Indigenous affairs policy in Australia since 2004, focusing on the period following the end of ATSIC. The book presents a fresh perspective on policy by proposing a consolidated approach that moves beyond traditional debates of self-determination versus assimilation. Sullivan argues that Indigenous peoples, settlers, and immigrants share common interests, advocating for mutual adaptation, particularly among descendants of settlers and immigrants, to recognise Indigenous presence in their identity. He critiques the centralised bureaucratic control from metropolitan centres as ineffective and suggests regional strategies for better policy implementation and accountability. The book enriches the understanding of Indigenous policy through empirical studies, contributing to the anthropology of policy and public administration.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

This book describes current Indigenous affairs policy in Australia, concentrating on the period since the end of ATSIC in 2004. It provides a unique overview of the trajectory of current policy, with Sullivan advancing a new consolidated approach to Indigenous policy which moves beyond the debate over self-determination and assimilation.

Instead, he suggests that the interests of Indigenous peoples, settlers and immigrants are fundamentally shared, and proposes adaptation on both sides, but particularly for the descendants of settlers and immigrants, to allow them to embrace the framing of their identity by Indigenous presence.

Sullivan is also critical of the remote control of Indigenous lives from metropolitan centres, with long lines of bureaucratic oversight that are inherently maladaptive and inefficient, and he proposes regional measures for policy implementation and accountability.

Belonging Together's empirical studies of current policy implementation advance the body of knowledge in the underdeveloped field of the anthropology of policy and public administration.
