Architecture, Film, and the In-between
Architecture, Film, and the In-Between: Spatio-Cinematic Betwixt brings together some of the most prominent thinkers in contemporary architectural discourses with an investigation of the filmic imagination of architectural in-betweenness, as well as the in-between spaces within the architectural structure of filmic expression. 32 col illus.
How films imagine and represent in-between spaces and how cinematic production becomes a site to project spatial fantasies.
Architecture, Film, and the In-between: Spatio-Cinematic Betwixt explores the cinematic representation of architectural in-betweenness, alongside the in-between spaces within the architectural structure of films. As films endeavour to depict architecture in evolving, original ways, they also expand betwixt areas, imbuing them with elements of horror or fantasy. Spies can escape inside unconvincingly stable ducts, and children can slide through pipes with no discernible function.
Moreover, just as subway routes and airplanes stitch together two destinations, loopholes and magical architectural features can connect distinct realms via interstitial spaces. Contributors discuss a range of architects and filmmakers, including John Lautner, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Agnรจs Varda, and Mies van der Rohe. They employ diverse approaches to the liminal space between architecture and film, engaging with existential experience, post-phenomenological thinking, sociopolitical cinearchitecture, fictive ecologies, and more.
This collection of essays features well-respected architects, thinkers, and philosophers, such as Juhani Pallasmaa, Beatriz Colomina, and Graham Harman. The book includes imagery and infographics that map filmic spaces, diagram narratives, and visualise the hidden spatial dimensions of movies.
