A curated collection of the most beautiful and remote spots in bays, rivers, and harbours around the UK and Ireland.

The UK and the Irish coastlines boast some of the most stunning and varied places in the world for dropping anchor. However, it’s not always easy to find anchorages that are sheltered and secure with beautiful scenery. Authored by a panel of highly experienced cruisers, this guide offers detailed knowledge of every part of the coast of the UK, Ireland, and the Channel Islands.

Their recommendations can be trusted to take sailors away from the crowds to some of the very best anchorages these islands have to offer. Discover locations like peaceful Babbacombe Bay in Devon with stunning views or Toberdenny in Ireland, an unspoiled natural harbour that's achingly beautiful at sunset.

Each anchorage is accompanied by a chart, brilliant photography, and a description of the place, covering why you should go, any hazards to look out for, and information on your approach, navigation, shelter, facilities available, and wildlife to spot.

Anchorages of the British Isles is the perfect planning guide for day trips, weekend getaways, or summer breaks. Explore cherry-picked, lesser-known locations and make the most of the beautiful coastline. Get ready to discover the finest spots to drop anchor along the coasts of the British Isles.

About the Author

Jane Cumberlidge has regularly cruised the Biscay coast of France, the Basque coast of Spain, Brittany and the Channel Islands as well as the West Country. For the last 25 years she has freelanced, writing and editing books and magazine features on nautical topics. She is also a photographer and has an extensive library of images on coastal, inland waterway and general nautical subjects. Dick Durham started sailing aged 12 and has cruised from Norway to Gibraltar; been at the end of a lifeboat tow-rope in the Bay of Biscay when a force 10 storm disabled the 55ft brigantine, Black Pearl and raced in the America’s Cup Jubilee aboard the 12 metre Victory. He acted as watch leader aboard Gipsy Moth IV on two legs of her second circumnavigation, crewed for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston aboard Suhaili, and has written six sailing books. Norman Kean has been sailing the coast of Ireland since 1980, contributing to pilot books since 1984, and has been Editor of the ICC Sailing Directions since 2005. He is frequent contributor to Yachting Monthly and has extensive knowledge and experience of this area. Jonty Pearce is a lifelong cruising yachtsman and retired GP. He keeps his Southerly 105 ketch Aurial in Milford Haven and regularly sails with his wife Carol. Jonty started sailing dinghies at the age of 10 and holds the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. Dag Pike began his career as a merchant captain, went on to test RNLI lifeboats, and took up fast boat navigation, winning a string of trophies for powerboat races around the world, including navigating Richard Branson's Virgin Atlantic Challenger on the record-breaking fastest Atlantic crossing by powerboat. He later became a navigation and powerboat journalist in demand all over the world.
