Another Day in the Colony by Chelsea Watego is an evocative and transformative collection of essays that bravely confronts the pervading colonial violence endured by First Nations people in Australia. Through her incisive and unapologetic narrative, Watego offers readers an unvarnished glimpse into the entrenched racism that Indigenous communities continue to face daily. Far from delivering another account of the so-called β€˜Aboriginal problem’, she offers a visceral and theoretical blueprint for existing and thriving in a society that has only ever envisioned Indigenous peoples as relics of the past.

Within the pages of this compelling book, Watego draws from her personal experiences and keen observations of colonial mechanisms to debunk the pervasive myths that settlers perpetuate about Indigenous people. With an unflinching voice, she shares her own storiesβ€”both fierce and intimate, often interlaced with humour and sorrow. These narratives paint a vivid picture of her resilience and steadfast determination to affirm her sovereignty, despite the toll this stance takes on her relationships, career aspirations, and physical well-being.

Watego's essays traverse a myriad of arenas, from academia and the courts to the often hostile landscape of the media. Instead of framing her stories within the paradigm of resistance, she speaks of standing firm against the relentless tide of colonialism. Her unyielding critique is as much a personal testament as it is a universal call to arms, urging readers to confront uncomfortable truths and challenge the status quo.

In a particularly poignant declaration, Watego dismisses the commonly extended olive branch of β€˜hope’, stating unequivocally: Fuck hope. Be sovereign. Her powerful proclamation encapsulates the essence of her collectionβ€”an unrelenting pursuit of autonomy and self-determination amidst the unceasing pressures of colonial oppression.

Another Day in the Colony is a seminal work that not only enlightens but empowers its readers. Chelsea Watego’s voice is an essential addition to contemporary discussions on race, sovereignty, and the ongoing struggles of First Nations people. This book is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand and engage with the profound complexities of Indigenous life in modern Australia.
