Though primarily a painter, Hendricks credits photography as a key to his practice, which he studied under Walker Evans and often uses as reference to create his stunning, photorealistic portraits. For the first time, they are grouped together in a dedicated volume.

Skira and Jack Shainman Gallery have partnered to realise an unprecedented book project dedicated to the artist Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017). The project consists of four booklets, each of which provides an in-depth exploration of a body of work integral to the artist's output (Works on Paper, Landscape Paintings, Basketball Paintings, Photography), in addition to a comprehensive 300-page monograph which traces the artist's evolution for the entirety of his career.

Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?

Critics applaud this unprecedented volume for revealing lesser-known aspects of Hendricks's oeuvre, particularly his prolific photography. Jane Ursula Harris from Bookforum notes that these works illuminate his compelling interests beyond painting during periods when he paused portraiture. Andy Battaglia of ARTnews highlights the photography installment as a vital addition to understanding the artist's life and work. Caroline Goldstein at Artnet praises Hendricks's photographic eye for capturing stylish and confident subjects, a sensibility mirrored in his paintings. Arthur Lubow from the New York Times commends the wit and pride evident across all media in this collection.
