This is the tale of New Zealand’s most notorious sheep-stealer and his loyal working dog. More than 160 years ago, James Mackenzie and his black-and-white collie, Friday, secretly herded 1,000 stolen sheep through rugged, unmapped mountain passes.
A statue of the pair stands today in the heart of Mackenzie Country in the South Island.
