"A highly original account of how borders between states are changing today"-- Provided by publisher.
It is commonly thought that, thanks to globalisation, nation-state borders are becoming increasingly porous. Sorting Machines by Steffen Mau shows that this view is misleading: borders are not getting more permeable today, but rather are being turned into powerful sorting machines.
Supported by digitalisation, they have been upgraded to smart borders, and border control has expanded spatially on a massive scale. Mau illustrates how the new sorting machines create mobility and immobility at the same time: for some travellers, borders open readily, but for others they are closed more firmly than ever.
While a small circle of privileged people can travel almost anywhere today, the vast majority of the worldβs population continues to be systematically excluded. Nowhere is the Janus nature of globalisation more evident than at the borders of the 21st century.
Book Hero Magic summarised reviews for this book. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! HOW HAS THIS BEEN REVIEWED?
Lea Ypi from the London School of Economics and Political Science praises the book as "elegantly written and sharply argued," highlighting its exploration of selective citizenship, algorithmic governance, and securitisation of mobility, revealing how freedom of movement favours wealthy elites. Claus Offe of the Hertie School of Governance calls it a "timely and highly readable book" that offers important insights into how states use borders to organise hierarchies in migration, labour, and politics. The European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology describes it as "compelling and eminently readable."
