About the Author
Born in 1973 in Ishikawa-ken, Japan, Hiromasa Yonebayashi studied Commercial Design at the Kanazawa College of Art. In 1996 Yonebayashi joined Studio Ghibli and worked as an βin-betweenβ animator onΒ Princess MononokeΒ (1997) andΒ My Neighbors the YamadasΒ (1999), and as Key Animator forΒ Spirited AwayΒ (2001), βThe GHIBLIES Episode 2β (2002),Β Howlβs Moving CastleΒ (2004), andΒ PonyoΒ (2008). He was also the Assistant Supervising Animator forΒ Tales from EarthseaΒ (2006).
Yonebayashi has also worked on short films for the Ghibli Museum, Mitaka. He was the Director of Animation for the βMei and the Baby Cat Busβ (2002), the Supervising Animator for βImaginary Flying Machinesβ (2002), and also storyboarded and directed βEvolutionβ (2008), a short film documenting the βFilms Go Roundβ exhibit.
Yonebayashi made his debut as the director of a feature-length animated film with Studio Ghibli's productionΒ Arrietty. AfterΒ Arrietty,Β Yonebayashi directed another Ghibli movie,Β When Marnie Was ThereΒ (2014), then left the studio and made Mary and the Witchβs FlowerΒ for Studio Ponoc.
