Contemporary Dualism

A Defense

Contemporary Dualism challenges the dominant view of ontological materialism in philosophy of mind. The book presents a range of arguments defending mind-body dualism, advocating that this perspective remains a philosophically credible alternative to the prevailing monistic approaches. It emphasises dualism as an ontological position, distinct from merely linguistic or epistemic forms.

Book Hero thinking about your next read

Ontological materialism, in its various forms, has become the orthodox view in contemporary philosophy of mind. This book provides a variety of defenses of mind-body dualism, and shows (explicitly or implicitly) that a thoroughgoing ontological materialism cannot be sustained.

Book Hero Magic formatted this description to make it easier to read. While it's new and still learning, it may not be perfect - your feedback is welcome! Description

Ontological materialism, in its various forms, has become the orthodox view in contemporary philosophy of mind. This book provides a variety of defences of mind-body dualism, and shows, explicitly or implicitly, that a thoroughgoing ontological materialism cannot be sustained.

The contributions are intended to show that, at the very least, ontological dualism (as contrasted with a dualism that is merely linguistic or epistemic) constitutes a philosophically respectable alternative to the monistic views that currently dominate thought about the mind-body (or, perhaps more appropriately, person-body) relation.

Contemporary Dualism aims to challenge the prevailing notions and offers a fresh perspective on the enduring debate concerning the relationship between the mind and body.

"In the current intellectual climate, where physicalism and naturalism hold sway, it is useful to have a volume that surveys a number of contemporary dualistic positions, and this book is a good start." - Lynne Rudder Baker, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews
