In the darkness, the main room is as vast as a cathedral. A great empty space. Some warmth is still seeps from the radiators. Delfosse strikes a match. They stop a moment to catch their breath, and work out how far they have still to go. And suddenly the match falls to the ground, as Delfosse gives a cry and rushes back towards the washroom door.
Maigret observes from a distance as two teenage boys are accused of killing a rich foreigner in a seedy club in Li ge. As the disturbing truth about the man's death emerges, greed, pride and envy start to drive the two friends apart.
Liège, the city of Simenon's youth, comes to life in this disturbing Maigret novel.
A vast emptiness. The room, in the darkness, seemed big as a cathedral. Warm currents of air still drifted from the radiators. Delfosse struck a match. They paused for a moment to take a breath and get their bearings. And suddenly the match dropped. A piercing shriek came from Delfosse... Chabot saw something too.
Maigret observes from a distance as two boys are accused of killing a rich foreigner in Liège. Their loyalty, which binds them together through their adventures in the seedier side of the city, is put to the test and seemingly irrelevant social differences threaten their friendship.
The Dancer at the Gai-Moulin is a captivating addition to Simenon's collection, exploring themes of loyalty, friendship, and the challenges posed by societal divides.

“The matchless French crime novelist.” – Adam Gopnik, The New Yorker

About the Author
Georges Simenon was born in Li ge, Belgium, in 1903. An intrepid traveller with a profound interest in people, Simenon strove on and off the page to understand, rather than to judge, the human condition in all its shades. His novels include the Inspector Maigret series and a richly varied body of wider work united by its evocative power, its economy of means, and its penetrating psychological insight. He is among the most widely read writers in the global canon. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.
